SERENDIPITY
Frank Bond Centre on the third Wednesday
of every month at 2.15 pm.
Although
Serendipity means by lucky chance we usually
have a theme in mind as well - just in case - and sometimes members
will have prepared something special. Our meetings have revealed many
interesting stories:
- Diana, with her brother and mother were
on one of the last boats to leave Singapore ahead of the Japanese
invasion (her father was a POW). Her mother kept a detailed diary and
Don read us several excerpts that we found fascinating.
- Pat also
read from a diary which had been kept by her Great Uncle who, as a
young man, went to Africa as a missionary and it too made fascinating
reading. It was very moving to read how soon he and his two friends
became ill, and all had died within two years.
- Margaret
has shared her experiences of growing up in the Channel Islands while
the Germans occupied it.
- Betty
has told us of the work she did in China teaching blind girls.
- Kay and
Nora were both in the Control Commission in Hamburg.
- Paul has
shown us several of the beautiful mathematical models he makes.
We have all shared our
memories of our experiences of the days before running water and
electricity, and of our schooldays. It is a smallish group and very
friendly.
It
is necessary to pay an annual membership of £10 to the Frank Bond
Centre to attend meetings there, but the one payment covers all
meetings and activities. Visitors pay £1 per meeting.
